What is SmartLipo?
SmartLipo fat removal treatments are the latest technology for removing fat with a laser. The technique was first discovered in Europe and has recently become available in the USA. This technique has been used extensively in South America, Europe, and Asia for the past 10 years. The treatment involves the use of a laser that rapidly dissolves the fat being targeted and, at the same time, tightens the surrounding skin. The procedure is done in an office and does not require the use of a general anesthesia.
Who is a candidate for SmartLipo?
SmartLipo is an excellent technique for removal of fat from difficult areas of the body. It is more efficient at removing fat from localized pockets which have proven resistant to diet and exercise. The ideal patient is one who is in good health and who has an active lifestyle.
Which area is SmartLipo useful for?
SmartLipo has been designed to treat localized pockets of fat in these areas:
abdomen
waist
chin (double or hanging)
turkey neck
inner and outer thighs
hips
upper arms
males with breasts
back of neck
pubic mound
back
bra bulge
flanks (love handles)
Who is not a candidate for SmartLipo?
SmartLipo is not suitable for individuals with:
diabetes
liver problems
blood disorders
kidney problems
heart problems
skin disorders
insulin-dependent to diabetics
pregnancy
Is the fat removal permanent?
Despite claims of some physicians, there is no treatment that can permanently remove ALL the fat cells in a given area of the body. A thin layer of fat cells will remain in areas treated with any excess fat removal procedure. The best way to keep the fat off is to continue exercise and watch one's diet.
How is the procedure done?
The procedure is done in our office. Prior to the procedure, the targeted areas are marked and a local anesthetic is used to numb the area. The laser is a pen held device which is fired close to the skin. As soon as the laser is fired, the fat cells break up and liquefy. The laser also causes small blood vessels to coagulate (gel) immediately on contact, resulting in less bleeding and swelling. The laser also affects the collagen in the skin which later causes the skin to tighten and shrink. The standard procedure takes about 3 hours depending on the area or areas treated.
What is recovery like?
After the treatment, you can expect minimal pain and/or bruising. A pressure dressing or a compression garment is required depending on the location of the treated area. The compression dressing or garment helps to decrease the swelling. The bruising disappears in 2-3 days and most all individuals are able to resume their normal activities within 24 hours. The mild ache can be relieved with over the counter pain medications. We recommend 1-2 days rest, but some patients are able to return to work immediately.
When do I see results?
Results can be seen immediately with continued improvement over several months. Soon after the procedure, the treated area will appear tighter, more compact, and smaller. Within the next 6-8 weeks, the skin and surrounding area will remodel and adjust to the body contour. The remodeling is a gradual process and the best results are seen after 2-4 months.
How many sessions can one have?
It all depends on the area and the location. For most patients, typically 1 treatment is required. Repeat sessions are only done after an interval period of 3-6 months.
When can one return to work after SmartLipo?
One can return to work within 24 hours after the procedure.
What are some advantages of SmartLipo over other procedures?
SmartLipo offers minimal discomfort during the procedure
There is minimal pain which only lasts 24-48 hours
Majority of patients can return to work in 24 hours
There is minimal bleeding or bruising
There are no side effects of general anesthesia
There are no sutures involved
SmartLipo causes the skin to tighten as liposuction leaves hanging and empty skin.
Is SmartLipo approved for use in the USA?
The SmartLipo fat reduction treatment received clearance from the FDA in November 2006.
SmartLipo Cost
The average cost for SmartLipo treatment can be between $2000-$4000

Smartlipo Laser Body Sculpting Laserlipolysis
As more women and men want to look and feel better about them selves, body contouring and lipo-sculpture continue to grow in popularity, making liposuction the most popular cosmetic surgery performed today. SmartLipo is the first laser-assisted lipolysis system to offer a revolutionary and minimally invasive procedure for the removal of fat. Using a high-powered laser Smartlipo is a new Laser Body Sculpting procedure with less down time and side effects than traditional liposuction.
How SmartLipo Works
If you're seeking a cutting-edge, highly effective method to significantly improve the safety and efficiency of many surgical techniques, then laser technology is definitely the technique you'll want to consider. Routinely used in dental procedures, lasik eye surgery, reconstructive work and cosmetic procedures, including liposuction‚ laser technology is what sets SmartLipo apart from its competition. The word laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Precise and safe, today's medical-grade lasers work by creating a powerful light beam that is adjusted to a specific wave range. SmartLipo is different in that it uses a carefully calibrated laser to liquefy fat deposits through the top layers of the patient's skin. The laser actually ruptures fat cells, and the resulting oily, liquid substance is then removed through a tiny incision in the skin by the surgeon. The small laser can also seal blood vessels as it zaps fat, so there is less swelling, bleeding and bruising than with traditional liposuction. Research has shown that little, if any, fat is reabsorbed back into the body. The minimal invasiveness of the procedure allows patients to see faster results and to experience fewer complications. In addition, SmartLipo patients need only a local anesthetic for this procedure, whereas liposuction requires general anesthesia. Because the patient is not completely unconscious, SmartLipo carries much fewer risks than traditional liposuction, and the recovery time is much shorter. SmartLipo‚ is cutting-edge, safe and effective.
How does the SmartLipo procedure work?
A very small cannula, or tube, approximately 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm in diameter containing a laser fiber is inserted into the skin. The cannula is moved back and forth delivering the laser's energy to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and easily drain away. The laser energy also interacts with the dermis it resulting in collagen shrinkage. Due to the cannula's small size, SmartLipo‚ is a minimally invasive procedure and can be performed under local anesthesia. The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, resulting in less bleeding, swelling and bruising, - and a quicker recovery time than conventional liposuction. Because general anesthesia is unnecessary, the procedure is very safe with only minimal side effects.
Is SmartLipo Right for You?
Almost anyone can be a good candidate for SmartLipo. In general, the ideal candidate: (1) is in good health, exercises regularly, is within 25 lbs. of his or her ideal weight; (2) has one or more areas of local body fat deposits that have responded poorly to diet and exercise; and (3) is bothered by these fatty areas, and is motivated to get rid of them permanently. Your doctor will review the benefits and risks of SmartLipo with you during your consultation visit. He will assess whether you are a good candidate with respect to your medical health, and he will clarify what SmartLipo could do for you.
Generally, SmartLipo might be right for you if:
You don't have a lot of time to spend in recovery. SmartLipo patients are typically back to work within 1-2 days following the procedure. Bandages are removed 1-2 weeks after that.
