What is Laser Vein Removal?
Laser technology offers a very effective means of treating spider veins.
The laser has a unique ability to selectively target blood vessels
without adversely affecting surrounding tissue. The vessels are gently
heated. The body reabsorbs the treated blood vessels during the natural
What types of veins can be treated?
The CoolGlide laser can treat spider veins, reticular veins (deeper blue veins), and facial veins. We offer a complimentary consultation to evaluate your situation and determine if you might need an ultrasound on your veins.
What does it feel like?
Although many patients report little or no discomfort, some may experience a mild stinging sensation only when the laser pulse is delivered. The cold tip on the hand piece helps soothe the skin before and after the laser energy is delivered.
How long will the treatment take?
Treatment time should be 30- 60 minutes but may vary depending on the
number and size of the vessel(s) to be treated
How many treatments will I need?
Depending upon the severity of the veins, you may require between 2
and 4 laser treatments, spaced at 4 weeks apart. The treatment is
performed on the existing blood vessels, diminishing or completely
eliminating their appearance. However, any new developing veins cannot be
prevented by laser vein removal. Grand Rapids residents might have to
return for further treatments if they are prone to developing vascular
When can I resume normal activities?
Although we encourage you to resume normal activities almost immediately, we do ask that you refrain from vigorous exercise and avoid hot tubs for at least 24 hours post treatment. Also avoid direct sun exposure after treatment, and if you do go in the sun, protect the treated area with a minimum SPF 30 Block (not sunscreen). If treating facial veins, avoid any irritants to your skin, such as any products containing Retin-A, retinol, Benzoyl Peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids or astringents for one week before and after your treatment.
How does Vein Therapy work?
Our laser system delivers pulses of light energy. The laser deliverer’s energy to the vein causing it to collapse which is later reabsorbed by your body. Blood flow will then be redirected to veins deeper below your skin’s surface, where it should be.
How does this compare to Sclerotherapy?
Many patients prefer laser therapy (vs. vein therapy).
What about blood blisters and port wine stains?
Blood blisters or “hemangiomas” respond very well to vein therapy, usually with just one treatment. Patients with port wine stains and other vascular lesions who had given up on finding a solution have been overwhelmed by the success of laser vein removal treatments.
What are the possible side effects?
Although many patients report few if any side effects, those most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin. These effects typically last for less than 24 hours. Some patients may experience bruising and, in rare instances, blistering may occur. Consult with your medical professional for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.
When will I see results?
Most patients find that the majority of the treated veins have shown significant improvement within two to six weeks of treatment. However, your final results may not be apparent for several months. Over time, it is possible for new veins to appear, but these too can be removed with our laser system.
